Campus Conversations

Building a Community of Scholars Intitiating Faculty and Student Learning

Beginning in Fall 1998, the Faculty Professional Development Center began its mission to build a community of scholars. The Center and the University Teaching Council initiated an integrative phase to develop a framework for Campus Conversations; to bring together many groups involved in the study of teaching to reflect on our individual and collective efforts.

Campus Conversations on Service Learning
How can I help students to reach their learning goals? Come discover on February 9 how service-learning can add a dynamic component to student learning.

Breakfast or Lunch with the Provost
Breakfast or lunch with the Provost is an opportunity for conversation to take place among faculty members and the Provost whose focus is on teaching and learning.  This event enables faculty to share stories about teaching with colleagues among the different campuses.  Would you like to bring together colleagues from your campus for a breakfast or lunch conversation?

Campus Conversations, November, 2005: Designing Motivating Curricula Using What Students Believe About Intelligence
Recent investigations are providing evidence that students view one's ability (specifically intelligence) as either a stable trait or something that is controllable. We will discuss how these implicit theories about ability directly effect goal orientation and in turn behavioral approaches to academic challenges, and discuss designing classrooms that encourage these different academic approaches..

Campus Conversations, October, 2005: Inciting Thinking in the College Classroom Through Brain-Compatible Teaching Strategies
Dr. Caufield's presentation, held Monday October 17, 2005 from 7:00pm to 9:00pm, in the Moulton Hall Ballroom, included research-based strategies that faculty can use to engage their students and help develop critical thinking, creative thinking, and metacognitive skills. The presentation was co-sponsored by: EFSS, the Office of the Provost, FPDC, and the Educational Psychology Learning Community. Campus Conversations, 2004: Making Connections in Teaching and Learning
In the fall of 2004 the Educational Psychology Learning Community, Ohio Learning Network, fpdc, Office of the Provost, and the University Teaching Council sponsored three workshops. Under the title of Campus Conversations: Making Connections in Teaching and Learning, the topics of the workshops were memory, cognition, and the biology of the brain. These interesting and enlightening workshops afforded graduate students and faculty the opportunity to earn graduate credit or a professional development certificate through the Educational Foundations and Special Services department of the College and Graduate School of Education.

University Teaching Council Conference on Teaching
Each year the University Teaching Council holds a conference on teaching during the month of October. This two day event begins with an evening reception of Campus Conversations, a round-table discussion on teaching, and is followed the next day by presentations from internationally recognized speakers, small discussion sessions, poster displays and demonstrations. The event culminates with a reception to honor recipients of the Distinguished Teaching Awards and Outstanding Teaching Awards for Non-tenure Track Faculty. All events are free and open to all conference participants.
