"Training on two novel video analysis programs for a cat petting behavior project"

I study animal social behavior and communication. Recently I have been studying cat petting, one of the most commonly-occurring social behaviors between cats and their human companions. Preliminary video analysis of owners petting their own cat vs a friend's cat, and vice versa, have revealed interesting petting styles. Further analysis depends on the use of software developed specifically for video research. I will be trying two different packages to decide which works best for this study and to train myself and an undergraduate student on their use. More videos will be shot in Spring and Fall 2010 as well as during a proposed sabbatical project in 2011. The Moulton Scholars award will provide me with a working space and access to computer-program experts who can help me with these complex analysis programs.

"Exploration of an Innovative 3D Virtual World"

The goals of the project are 1) to introduce students to on-line business knowledge and problem-solving skills in a 3D virtual environment through creative thinking and application, and 2) to provide not only my teaching projects, but also my research extension. This project will contribute to development of other courses (e.g., on-line course development) in Fashion School over time through adaptation of new technology.

"What’s Content Got to Do With It? A Study of Audience Participation on the Stories That Fly Web site"

The literature suggests that audience participation leads to better quality Web sites and even builds communities. But why do people choose to rate, comment on, upload their own content to and otherwise interact with the Web sites that interest them? In this pilot study, we will find out what sort of multimedia content – online text, photo and video, among other types – prompts participation from one group of Web site users: Subscribers and Twitter followers of Stories That Fly (www.storiesthatfly.com), an innovative online community news venture that features narratives, photography and video from general aviation.
