Workshops:

Qualitative Assessment -  Anthony Garrison
Assessment if frequently defined as a “systematic” and “systemic” attribute of the classroom.  In practice, however, assessment can be fragmented, secondary in purpose, and often a difficult tool on which to capitalize.  This session looks at the various learning environments we work in and explores a variety of formative assessments that help gauge and encourage learning.

Quantitative Approach to Student Assessment - Jason Schenker

R-U-a-Brick? So Tell Me What to Do. . . -Jeffrey Pellegrino
Do you wonder this about students and colleagues sometimes? Is this a response from the students? During this workshop we’ll look at what rubrics are designed to do by first asking what do we assume and what do we want to identify. This means of student assessment can be a wonderful mutual and community driven response to understanding cognitive and metacognitive learning for your students and you. Don’t forget to bring your learning objectives from this mornings first session.

Using Case Studies as a Research Method -Holly Wells
In this workshop, we will briefly discuss what a case study is and what it does, what types of case studies may be employed in research, and how to examine qualitative data for the rich detail that is the hallmark of the case study method.
Attendees will work through a small sample data set and begin to look for/create patterns, themes, links, and categories. Returning to the original research object and question, attendees will discuss whether the data seem to be answering the research question, or whether additional data need to be collected or the research question modified. A brief overview of the written case study report will close the workshop.
Brief Outline Workshop

Student Assessment and Technology - Chip Ingram
How can you assess your students’ knowledge and skills in your classes? How can technology help you both assess and give feedback to students? Come talk about new ways to use technology in this vital part of teaching.

Ohio Digital Resource Commons - Rick Wiggins
The presentation will be a high-level over of the Ohio Digital Resource Commons, including the types of information that can be stored and found there and the way that Kent State and other Ohio institutions are using it.
