The ISLS (Igniting Streams of Learning in Science) program, co-sponsored by Hiram College, Kent State University, and The University of Akron, comprises an 8-day Summer Institute, a 1-day Fall Institute, a 1-day Early Spring Institute, field trips, and an overnight trip to the annual Ohio Learning Network conference in Columbus, Ohio, held in early March. The year-long program is designed to inspire students to pursue careers in science and science education. Students focus on ways to improve their own local watershed environment by using the latest technology for watershed analysis, by working with experts in the field, and by developing (along with scientists and teachers) a high school curriculum that encourages local students to be active in environmentalism.

The program’s newsletter, ignition, focuses on a different learning community each month, and also includes features on current issues in science and science education, technology, and relevant journals. Each issue features updates on the individual learning communities for the current year, providing details on their learning objects to share with the broader ISLS community. Interviews with participants and visits with program graduates keep the community apprised of the program’s progress toward its long-term goals for change in Ohio’s science education.
